  • 1 hectare of cacao on primary forest
  • 1 hectare of maize on primary forest

Map of your 15 hectare plot of land

You earned $350. That's less than last year, due to a drop in coffee prices, and not quite enough for your family to live on.You're forced to borrow from your brother, promising to pay him back after next year's harvest.

But you've only got two hectares of primary forest left. Your family has towalk to a neighbor's land to find medicinal plants. The water in the creekrunning past your house is always muddy now. There's little shade left toescape the hot noonday sun.

You realize that you have nearly run out of primary forest. Soon you'llhave to plant your crops in secondary forest--or find another line of workbesides farming.

Some peoplein your Quichua community are talking about ecotourism. Instead offarming more land, the community can earn money by bringing in touristsand teaching them about the Quichua way of life. Do you think the communityshould consider ecotourism? Or wouldyou like to start over with your cash crops?
